The Kongo River Estuary at Diani sands is one of the most beautiful areas in Diani, Mombasa. It’s a great place for a scenic drive, and the views are amazing. The river is wide and shallow here, with mangroves lining the banks.

There are also a few small islands in the river that make for great photo opportunities. If you’re looking for a relaxing getaway. With amazing baobab trees and traditional beach restaurants This is a wonderful place to visit and relax. Be sure to check out this spot!

The riverbank is easily accessible and makes for a wonderful walk, With so many different varieties of birds and wildlife. This is where fresh water meets saltwater creating a mixed selection of wildlife and fish. Although not really recommended it is possible to find locals bathing in the Chrystal clear waters.

In this video, I visit the Kongo river estuary. This is where the Kongo river flows into the Indian ocean. It is also the furthest you can go along the Diani beach road as the river is the dividing line between Diani and Tiwi. One of Kenya’s oldest Muslim Mosques dating back to the 16th century can also be found here. 

The Diani Redbull challenge also takes place here every year. This wonderful river is about 4.7km long and separates Diani beach from Tiwi. I stop by at the Kongo sands restaurant and enjoy a meal of Tafi fish and chips.

Diani Beach is a world-famous tourist destination located along the Kenyan coast. Just a short distance away, visitors can find the ancient Kongo Mosque – one of the oldest and most significant mosques in all of Africa. When you arrive at the entrance to the Kongo river, these are the signs you will see directing you to the historic mosque.

National museum of Kenya, Kongo Mosque. This is a gazetted historical site protected by the NMHA 2006 of the laws of Kenya.

Although this is also a museum, check before you visit (especially if you want to take pictures) as the mosque is still used as a place of worship.

Kongo sands restaurant diani

If you like your seafood, then the Kongo sands restaurant is worth a visit. This very basic but traditional beach restaurant has a traditional Kenyan menu consisting mainly of the catch of the day. I chose a dish of Tai fish with chips and salad. I was most pleasantly Surprised and recommend having a meal here on your visit to Kongo river.

With a fantastic view overlooking the beach, Friendly staff with that warm Kenyan smile and welcome and very affordable prices. It is well worth Taking a break after your days trekking and the Kongo sands restaurant is the ideal spot, even if it’s just for a cold refreshing drink.

Red Bull quicksand challenge Diani Kongo sands

Are you up for the Kongo Sands Red Bull Challenge? This is an extreme race that takes place in the diani mombasa area of Kenya. The course winds through the sand dunes, and participants have to navigate their way through the tough terrain. If you’re looking for an adrenaline rush, this is definitely the race for you!

If you’re thinking of taking on the challenge, be sure to prepare yourself mentally and physically. The course is not easy, so you’ll need to be in excellent shape if you want to finish. And don’t forget your sunscreen –the African sun can be brutal!

Where is Kongo river?

If you drive north along the Diani beach Road you will arrive at the Kongo river. You can not miss it as this is the end of the Diani beach road. If you find yourself in water you have gone too far.
