Backpacking southeast Asia
Wow, 3 months backpacking through Southeast Asia. For many, truly a dream come true, but how much money should you take? and how much will it cost? This will obviously vary with each person as everyone is different and what may suit one person may not be to another’s desire.
In my experience, to meticulously plan your journey every step of the way would be presumptuous as there is so much going on and a change of direction is often inevitable, and you wouldn’t want to be held ransom to a set plan.
You could travel for over a year around southeast Asia and you still would not have even scratched the surface so don’t make the mistake of trying to see it all in 3 months. My advice is taking it easy, relax and go with the flow. Make a rough plan of places you would like to visit and things you would like to do, but don’t try and cram too much in.
What is cheaper to rent than a Hotel room in Southeast Asia?
Accommodation.
Your main expenses are going to be accommodation and travel. Again depending on what you are happy with accommodation can range from a fan-cooled beach hut or hostels ranging between £5.00-£10.00 a night or 4-5 star hotels at around £25.00-£45.00 per night depending on where you are & what time of year it is.
Airbnb often have some good deals between £20.00-£30.00 per night, (bearing in mind that in most places this price will be the same if there are two of you staying in the same room. Double bed is generally standard in most rooms. This would normally include swimming a swimming pool. Click on this link for great discounts. Most of the time I use Booking .com if im heading somewhere and just want to get to a hotel as soon as I arrive even if it is just for 1 night. There are cheaper places to stay but I wouldn’t recommend them.
If there is a group of you, it could be worth renting a chalet as this can work out a much cheaper option. Also ask the hotel the hotel reception if they have any long-term rent rooms, many hotels have rooms that are not good enough because of many reasons, could be many stairs to it, could be overlooking a noisy street etc. but if you are just looking for a cheap accommodation these are a few options.
Tips,
If you are planning to stay somewhere for a few days, it’s always advisable (booking online especially) to only book for one night as the brochures are not always what they say, and you can always extend your stay if you like it but getting a refund if you are not happy can be an arduous task.
Make sure you get air conditioning, it gets hot in some places and unless you are used to the heat, an air fan just doesn’t cut it.
So, given these options, your accommodation for 3 months will range from £800.00 for very basic-£2500.00 mid-range.
If you are planning to be moving about, I highly recommend you travel light, you only need the essentials and anything you need you can buy when you arrive. As you will be island hopping, getting on and off boats and ferries with baggage can be a mission.
What is the best & cheapest airline to fly to Asia?
International Flights
With the COVID-19 epidemic in full lockdown, return flights are not available now. A one-way flight with a stopover is around £350.00-£450.00. Direct flights start from £481.00 and are about 11-12 hours flying time. The average flight under normal circumstances would be around £400.00-£550.00 return with a stop-over and £650.00 upwards for direct return. These are rough estimates based on 2020 prices as no one knows how prices will be affected when the airports become fully operational again.

Internal flights
Internal flights from Thailand range from around £50.00-£60.00 one way. Thailand to other southeast Asian countries range from £130.00-£200 one way.

You may find one of these comes in handy.
How can I travel around Asia on a budget?
Local transport can be very cheap as long as you check prices before you get into any vehicle (except baht busses they are standard 10baht unless you ask for a specific destination).
Again this will vary in different countries but on an average if you plan to do a lot of daily excursions between £5.00-£15.00 would be a fair price to put on daily travel expenses.
There is also the option of hiring a motorbike, this will cost on average around £5.00 – £7.00 a day. In the expenditure charts below i will include this as daily travel expenses as I am sure you won’t be hiring a motorbike every day.
Why is street food so cheap in Southeast Asia?
Cost of eating.
If you like it hot & spicy, then you are in for a treat. Asians do like their chillies and the further south you go towards Vietnam and Cambodia the spicier it gets. I like my spicy food but there is a limit and be warned for some of these dishes you really do need an asbestos mouth.
So how much will it cost to feed yourself for 3 months? Again, this is going to have many options with respect to individuality and personal preferences. There are street food stalls and street vendors where you could buy a pad Thai mixed noodles ranging from £1.50 to £3.50. This would be enough to survive on for the day and every day if you were a light eater.
You could raise the budget to around £6.00-£8.00 for a substantial mid-range meal that would be sufficient to survive on. Then you could raise the budget even higher £8.00-£12.00 and have a great meal with a bottle of beer thrown in.
Although the food is fantastic in southeast Asia, always be aware that hygiene and cleanliness standards are very basic in many areas, so if you do choose to eat cheap street food, make sure you have a strong stomach.
How much does it cost to travel Southeast Asia for 3 months?
